If Tom Brady decides he wants to rejoin the New England Patriots, coach Jerod Mayo said there’s a spot for the all-time great — on his coaching staff.
“The door is always open if he wants to come in here and coach,” Mayo told WEEI’s “The Greg Hill Show” on Monday. “But as far as going on the field I don’t know.”
Mayo was asked about the quarterback reuniting with New England after Brady told the “DeepCut with VicBlends” podcast that he was “not opposed” to playing again if a team in need called him with an offer. Brady specifically mentioned the Patriots and Las Vegas Raiders as potential options, while noting he wasn’t sure if he could play if he became part-owner of the Raiders — an agreement still pending NFL approval, ESPN reported.
“I don’t know, I’m always going to be in good shape,” he said. “I’ll always be able to throw the ball. So, to come in for a little bit, like M.J. coming back, I don’t know if they’d let me, but I wouldn’t be opposed to it.”

Mayo joked that if Brady, who turns 47 in August, wanted to play again, he would have to come in and compete for a job.
“I doubt he’s going to be walking through these doors anytime soon,” Mayo said.
Brady is set to become an analyst with Fox this season, in addition to his pending Raiders ownership stake. Brady’s path toward making a bid to purchase a stake in the Raiders began in May 2022, when he attended a Las Vegas Aces game and was intrigued by the growth of the WNBA. That sparked a conversation with Davis, who also owns the Aces.
Brady acquired an ownership stake in the Aces in March 2023. Just two months later, he made a bid to purchase a stake in the Raiders. He’s been reportedly aiming to buy 10 percent of the franchise, which was valued at $6.2 billion by Forbes last year.
Davis has also kept details close to the vest about Brady’s pending acquisition, but he remains optimistic that the transaction will ultimately get approved.
Last week, New England added a quarterback less than half Brady’s age. The Patriots drafted North Carolina quarterback Drake Maye with the No. 3 pick. Maye, 21, is expected to compete with veteran Jacoby Brissett for the starting job.

“We have a solid quarterback room in our opinion and they’re going to compete and the best player will play,” Mayo told “The Greg Hill Show.”
