Cincinnati Bearcats offensive lineman Jeremiah Kelly, an incoming freshman in the team’s 2025 recruiting class, died unexpectedly at his residence Tuesday morning, the university announced. The cause of death was not disclosed.
Kelly, 18, was a three-star prospect who enrolled early at Cincinnati and participated in spring practices, which the football program wrapped up last week.
“The Bearcats football family is heartbroken by the sudden loss of this outstanding young man,” coach Scott Satterfield said in a statement. “In the short time Jeremiah has spent with our team, he has made a real impact, both on the field and in our locker room. My prayers are with the Kelly family and those who had the pleasure of knowing Jeremiah.”
A native of Avon, Ohio, located just west of Cleveland, Kelly joined the Bearcats after helping Avon High School to a 2024 Ohio Division II state championship in December, capping a 16-0 season for the Eagles.
“We’ve suffered a heartbreaking loss today,” Cincinnati athletic director John Cunningham said in a statement. “All of us at UC send our love and prayers to the Kelly family and we will do everything that we can to support them and our Bearcats student-athletes in the difficult days and weeks ahead.”
