USWNT and Portland Thorns forward Sophia Wilson has announced she is expecting her first child.
Wilson, 24, announced the news in a joint post on Instagram with her husband Michael Wilson, a wide receiver for NFL side Arizona Cardinals.
The pair posted a photo of themselves with an ultrasound scan accompanied by the caption “life just keeps getting sweeter”.
The Thorns posted a congratulatory message to Wilson on social media and said the club was “proud to support her through this incredible new chapter”.
Sophia and Michael Wilson both attended Stanford and they married in January 2025.
Wilson (nee Smith) joined Portland in 2020 as the first pick in the NWSL draft following her collegiate career with Stanford Cardinal.
She was named the NWSL’s MVP in 2022 after contributing 15 goals and three assists in 20 league appearances as the Thorns won the NWSL Championship.
The forward made her senior U.S. debut in 2020 and has been capped 58 times by the national side, scoring 24 goals. She was part of the gold medal-winning roster at the 2024 Paris Olympics.
Wilson scored 12 goals and provided six assists in 20 appearances for Portland during the 2024 season. She signed a new contract in March 2024 which runs through the 2025 season, with the option to extend through to 2026.
The NWSL agreed a new collective bargaining agreement (CBA) in September which guaranteed players are entitled to six months of fully paid maternity leave and have access to medical coverage, team facilities and resources during their maternity leave. Players also cannot lose contracts due to pregnancy and if a player’s contract expires during their pregnancy, their team must invite them to the next pre-season camp to earn their spot back.
The 2025 NWSL season begins in March, with the Thorns facing Kansas City Current on March 15.
