Folarin Balogun will undergo surgery on his injured shoulder as he faces an uncertain spell on the sidelines, said Monaco coach Adi Hutter.
The USMNT striker, who has already missed six Ligue 1 matches for his French club since dislocating his shoulder in October, had returned at the end of November for their Champions League defeat by Benfica. He was a 63rd-minute substitute for Breel Embolo in that game.
Balogun then started his club’s 2-1 defeat by Marseille on December 1, but the 23-year-old was withdrawn after 68 minutes.
He was not in the squad for their last league match, Saturday’s win over Toulouse, and speaking ahead of their Champions League tie with arsenal on Wednesday, Hutter confirmed the American had not travelled with the squad after the decision was made for him to go under the knife.
“The decision is that Balo is going for a surgery with his shoulder and we don’t know exactly how long is the duration,” said the Austrian. “But it’s a pity for him and a pity for us.”
Balogun has three goals from seven Ligue 1 appearances so far this season.
He has missed all of new USMNT coach Mauricio Pochettino’s games in charge so far due to the problem.
