The first men’s quarterfinal saw Taylor Fritz follow in fellow American Emma Navarro’s footsteps by reaching the first Grand Slam semifinal of his career as he defeated Alexander Zverev 7-6(2), 3-6, 6-4, 7-6(3).
This was the second straight Grand Slam in which Fritz beat the German, having also done so at Wimbledon earlier this year.
In the night session on Arthur Ashe, Frances Tiafoe was leading two sets to one and closing in on victory when Grigor Dimitrov, struggling through a leg injury, opted to retire from the match.
With Fritz and Tiafoe meeting in the semifinals on Friday, the U.S. is guaranteed to have a men’s Grand Slam finalist for the first time in 15 years.
