Former President Trump lashed out at prominent critic former Rep. Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.), calling her a “Muslim-hating warmonger” during a campaign event in Michigan on Saturday.
“Kamala is campaigning with Muslim-hating warmonger, Liz Cheney, who wants to invade practically every Muslim country on the planet. And let me tell you the Muslims of our country, they see it, and they know it,” Trump said at a rally in Novi, Mich.
“Her father was responsible for invading the Middle East, killing millions of Arabs – millions – and this is the one that Kamala is campaigning with,” he continued, referring to former Vice President Dick Cheney.
Liz Cheney has been one of the loudest voices against Trump, attacking him for his role in the Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol riot. She sought reelection last cycle for her at-large congressional seat in Wyoming but lost to Rep. Harriet Hageman (R-Wyo.), who was endorsed by Trump.
“I know Cheney very well, she lost by the biggest margin in the history of the United States Congress. Lost by almost 40 points. Nobody’s ever – no sitting Congress person has ever lost by even close to that amount,” Trump said in Michigan.
Trump’s remarks are particularly notable as Novi is located roughly half an hour northwest of Detroit, which is home to a large Arab-American and Muslim community. Many members of the community cast “uncommitted” votes against President Biden when he was still the Democratic nominee during the party’s primary, and many of those members have voiced frustration over the Biden administration’s handling of the Israel-Hamas war.
That key voting bloc is expected to play a key role in which campaign wins Michigan, one of seven critical battleground states that will determine who wins the White House next month.
Trump used Liz Cheney’s association with her father, who supported the Bush administration’s invasion of Iraq, and Liz Cheney’s proximity to Harris to repel Arab American and Muslim voters away from the Harris campaign.
“To make Kamala president would be a gamble with the lives of millions of people. She would get us into World War Three because she’s too grossly incompetent to do anything about it,” Trump said. “Your sons and your daughters will end up getting drafted. They’ll have a draft. Oh, she’d love a draft. All she wants is war. The reason I don’t get along with her is because she wanted to invade every damn country that she looked at. She’s a dope, like her father is a dope.”
Trump’s remarks come days after Harris and Cheney campaigned together in several battleground states, including Michigan.
“If you think about, how you conduct your life outside of politics… those are the kinds of people that you trust, those are the kinds of people you would work with,” Cheney explained at a campaign event with Harris in Wisconsin. “If you wouldn’t hire somebody to babysit your kids, then you shouldn’t make that guy the president of the United States.”
The Hill has reached out to the Harris campaign and a spokesperson for Cheney for comment.
