Titans signing WR Tyler Lockett ahead of NFL Draft: What's his connection to Cam Ward?

One night before the NFL Draft, where they hold the No. 1 pick, the Tennessee Titans added free-agent wide receiver Tyler Lockett.

Lockett confirmed his move to the Titans in a post on X, saying, “I’m excited to be a Tennessee Titan!! I’m super thankful and grateful Let’s get it!! God you get all the glory!!”

Lockett will sign a one-year, $4 million deal worth up to $6 million, according to ESPN.

The Titans are expected to draft Miami quarterback Cam Ward with the top pick, and Lockett will likely be a safety net for Ward. Lockett and Ward are closely connected with safety Quandre Diggs, Ward’s cousin and Lockett’s best friend. Diggs spent last season with the Titans after five years with the Seattle Seahawks.

The 32-year-old Lockett brings a veteran presence for a rookie quarterback after 10 years in the league, all with the Seahawks. He joins a Titans wide receiver corps that includes Van Jefferson, Calvin Ridley and Treylon Burks.

The Seahawks released Lockett in March, and he sits at No. 53 on The Athletic’s ranking of the top 150 unrestricted free agents.

Lockett’s numbers were down across the board in 2024 as he was demoted to the No. 3 receiver spot behind DK Metcalf and Jaxon Smith-Njigba. Statistically, as the second-best receiver in Seahawks history, Lockett accepted that role despite feeling he had more left in the tank and could have produced better numbers with more targets. Last season, he logged only two touchdowns on 49 catches and 600 receiving yards.

Lockett may not have the same downfield ability as earlier in his career, but he’s still a savvy route runner with reliable hands and excellent feet when making catches near the sidelines and in the back of the end zone.

For his career, Lockett has 661 catches, 8,594 yards and 61 touchdowns across 161 regular-season games. In seven playoff games, he’s tallied two touchdowns with 510 yards on 29 catches.
