The British cosmetics brand announced the closure of all its operations in Brazil in an Instagram post published on Thursday, January 2, 2025.
“Today’s message is a farewell. With hearts full of emotion and gratitude, we are ending a beautiful decade with you here in Brazil. Together, we have built an impactful story: we have fought against animal testing, we have celebrated diversity, empowerment and love for all forms of beauty. Each achievement was only possible because you were with us, sharing our values and our purpose,” said The Body Shop.
This decision is obviously part of the brand’s global withdrawal movement. Throughout 2024, The Body Shop has closed many subsidiaries, including in the United States, France, Belgium and the Netherlands.
Founded in 1976 in Brighton, southern England, by Anita and Gordon Roddick, The Body Shop has gained worldwide recognition for its ethical values and focus on sustainable practices. The company was acquired by L’Oréal in 2006, then by the Brazil’s beauty giant Natura in 2017. The latter sold it in November 2023 to the Aurelius fund, which announced the bankruptcy of the parent company shortly after. Finally, in June 2024, the brand was acquired by the investment fund Auréa Holding, founded by British businessman Mike Jatania. After a severe restructuring, it is said to have returned to profit.
After the sale to Aurelius was completed, Natura had retained the distribution rights for the brand in Brazil under a master franchise agreement due to end in December 2024 and was not renewed.
