Sergio Conceicao appointed head coach of AC Milan

Sergio Conceicao has been appointed as the new head coach of AC Milan.

The Athletic reported Milan were set to appoint Conceicao as Paulo Fonseca’s replacement, after he was sacked following his side’s draw with Roma

Fonseca, 51, departed Milan after six months in charge with the club eighth in Serie A.

Conceicao, 50, has been out of management since leaving Porto in June, nine days after winning the Portuguese Cup and now moves to San Siro on a contract until 2026.

Across his seven seasons in charge of Porto, Conceicao won three league titles, four Portuguese Cups, one Portuguese League Cup and three Portuguese Super Cups.

Conceicao’s managerial career also included stints at Olhanense, Academica, Braga and Vitoria Guimaraes, and six months in charge of French club Nantes before moving to Porto.

Across a 17-year playing career, he won league titles at Porto — three times — as well as at Lazio under Sven-Goran Eriksson. He also won the UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup and UEFA Super Cup during his time in Italy.

Milan are owned by US investment group RedBird Capital, who bought the club from Elliott Advisors in August 2022 in a deal that valued them at €1.2billion. RedBird also has a stake in Fenway Sports Group, the owners of the Boston Red Sox and Liverpool.

USMNT forward Christian Pulisic is the team’s top scorer in Serie A with five goals but has been sidelined by calf and ankle issues.

Milan return to action against Juventus on January 3, the club Conceicao’s son Francisco represents. The 22-year-old winger was previously managed by his father at Porto.
