Pep Guardiola: Manchester City 'definitely have to add players' in January transfer window

Pep Guardiola has said Manchester City “definitely have to add players” to their squad in the January transfer window as they look to turn around their alarming drop in form.

The Athletic reported in Boxing Day’s Transfer DealSheet that City are expected to be active in January, as they plan to work on strengthening multiple areas of their squad over the next two transfer windows.

City are planning on bolstering their defence, the midfield No 6 and No 8 positions alongside adding to their attacking options, although no one position has yet been prioritised for the upcoming winter window.

Guardiola’s side have won four Premier League titles in a row and six of the last seven, but their form has taken a sharp downturn this season — City have won just one of their most recent 12 matches across all competitions, and are currently seventh in the league.

“We have to add players, definitely,” Guardiola told Amazon Prime ahead of the Boxing Day fixture against Everton.

“You know, we struggle — especially at the back and in the middle so I think we have to. But saying that, I do not know what is going to happen. The transfer window in winter is not easy but everyone is aware of that. Even our players are aware of our situation and what we need to do.”

City’s director of football Txiki Begiristain is leaving the club at the end of the season, but will lead the process alongside Guardiola and other relevant personnel.

Guardiola recently signed a two-year contract extension at the Etihad and City are willing to invest strongly in players they believe will strengthen their squad.
