Why AFCON matters

In 2022, Ivory Coast striker Sebastien Haller was asked if he would prefer to stay with his title-chasing Dutch club Ajax to start the year rather than go to the Africa Cup of Nations.

His response was to the point.

“This question shows the disrespect for Africa,” he said.

“Would this question ever get asked to a European player ahead of the Euros? Of course I am going.”

Burkina Faso will not continue with head coach Hubert Velud after their disappointing last 16 exit at the Africa Cup of Nations.

Velud’s side lost against Mali after picking up four points in their group stage. In the past 11 years, Burkina Faso have reached one AFCON final and a further two semi-finals – making this year an underwhelming campaign.

Frenchman Velud, 64, will depart along with his coaching staff, the Burkinabe FA confirmed on Friday.

“The committee noted that results fell short of the expectations of the Burkinabe people and reassured football lovers of its desire that the national flag is raised at the highest level at future events.”

Velud is a vastly experienced coach whose managerial career has spanned more than 30 years, including previous stints in charge of Togo and Sudan.
