A winter storm passed through the metropolitan Atlanta and northern Georgia areas on Friday, blanketing several inches of snow, according to the National Weather Service.
It was the first snowfall over one inch recoded since 2018, as 2.1 inches of snow fell in Atlanta. With Atlanta’s annual snowfall less than two inches, the 2025 snowfall is already above average 11 days into the year.
Despite coming off a loss to the Phoenix Suns, the Hawks are 19-19 this season and hopeful to be trending upward courtesy of recent strong play by Trae Young and Jalen Johnson. Young currently leads the league in assists, averaging 12.1, while also putting up 22.5 points per game. Though Johnson hasn’t played since Jan. 3 due to inflammation in his right shoulder, he’s averaging 19.8 points, 10.1 rebounds and 5.3 assists. Atlanta currently sits at ninth in the Eastern Conference standings.
The Rockets, who are 25-12 on the year, are winners of three consecutive games and hold second place in the West standings.
The postponement of the Hawks-Rockets game is the latest of a week that has seen multiple sports schedules disrupted due to environmental conditions. Matchups between the Charlotte Hornets and LA Clippers at Inuit Dome and between the San Antonio Spurs and Los Angeles Lakers at Crypto.com Arena slated for Saturday were postponed Friday due to the ongoing wildfires in Los Angeles County. The NFL also had to move a wild-card playoff game between the Los Angeles Rams and Minnesota Vikings from SoFi Stadium to State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Ariz.
