Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson (D) said she expects her state’s election results to be certified the day after the Nov. 5 general election.

“In 2020 we had the results of our highest turnout election in Michigan history within 24 hours of the polls closing. The unofficial results were completed by 8 p.m. Wednesday, so we’re tracking that again this year,” Benson said Sunday on CBS News’s “Face the Nation.”

Benson said she is optimistic that this year’s results could come back even sooner because the state has more options to process ballots than it has in the past.

“That said, we will always prioritize accuracy and security over efficiency,” she said.

Benson said voters in Michigan are excited to cast their ballot in this election. More than 1 million people have already voted in the state, and more than 2 million requested an absentee ballot.

She said without hesitation she will certify the results of the presidential election — no matter who wins. Currently, former President Trump is leading Vice President Harris by 0.4 percentage points in Michigan, according to The Hill/Decision Desk HQ.
