Manchester United's Hannibal Mejbri completes Burnley move

Burnley have completed the signing of Hannibal Mejbri from Manchester United.

The Athletic reported on Monday that Burnley had agreed a deal to sign Hannibal, with the 21-year-old set for a medical with the Championship side.

He becomes Burnley’s eighth signing of the summer and has signed a four-year deal that runs until 2028.

“I’m very excited. Very happy to be here and I can’t wait to see the fans,” Hannibal said. “I have played against Burnley before at Turf Moor and the atmosphere was amazing.
“After speaking to the coach (Scott Parker) the project sounded good to me and hopefully we can make success.”

Hannibal joined United from Monaco in a deal worth €5million (£4.2m; $5.6m) rising to €10m with attainable add-ons.

As he has been at the club for five years, Hannibal’s book value — in terms of United’s compliance with Premier League and UEFA financial regulations — is the same as an academy product and thus his sale represents ‘pure profit’. Hannibal is the latest United youngster to depart Old Trafford this summer, joining Willy Kambwala, Will Fish, Facundo Pellistri, Maxi Oyedele and Omari Forson in leaving.

Hannibal spent the 2022-23 campaign on loan in the Championship with Birmingham City, where he played 41 times. He spent the second half of last season on loan at Sevilla but only featured six times for the Spanish side, who chose not to exercise their €20m purchase option on the Tunisian.

Hannibal has played 27 times for his country without scoring.

Burnley, meanwhile, rejected a €4m offer for captain Josh Brownhill from Turkish Super Lig side Trabzonspor. Scott Parker’s side have won two and lost one of their opening Championship games, having been relegated last season, and are next in action when they face Wolverhampton Wanderers at Molineux in the Carabao Cup second round on Wednesday.
