Luke Shaw set for weeks out after suffering new muscular injury

Manchester United defender Luke Shaw is set to be sidelined for a number of weeks after suffering a new muscular injury.

Shaw returned to action in November after missing the opening three months of the campaign with a calf injury and has made three substitute appearances this season.

However, the left-back has now sustained a fresh injury, and he took to social media to say he was “devastated” after his latest set-back.

“Hi guys, it’s hurting a lot having to write this as I really thought I had got through my recent struggles and was on a positive path going forward, but unfortunately I’ve had a small setback,” Shaw wrote on Instagram.

“I’ve been through a lot and had a lot of ups and downs but this has definitely been my toughest period. I’m absolutely devastated and it’s extremely tough to come to terms with reality at this moment in time.

“I understand there is gunna be people frustrated, angry, disappointed and I understand all that. There is no one feeling that more than me at this moment in time.

“But what I can promise is I will do everything I can to come back better soon to help this club achieve its ambitions this season.

“Thank you to everyone for the support. It really doesn’t go unnoticed and I really do appreciate it.”

Shaw was selected as part of England’s squad for the European Championship in the summer and made two appearances at the tournament, starting the 2-1 defeat in the final against Spain.

On his return to United, the 29-year-old suffered a calf issue at the start of pre-season training. Although initially expected to only miss the opening games of the Premier League season, former manager Erik ten Hag said in October that he had suffered a setback in his recovery.

He returned to team training in November and his 34-minute appearance from the bench against Ipswich Town in Ruben Amorim’s first game in charge was his first outing for United since coming off at half time during a 2-1 win at Luton Town in February with a hamstring issue, which ruled him out for the remainder of the domestic campaign.
