Lisandro Martinez, Noussair Mazraoui available for Manchester United's Carabao Cup game against Barnsley

Manchester United defenders Lisandro Martinez and Noussair Mazraoui are available for Tuesday’s Carabao Cup game against Barnsley.

The pair were taken off with apparent injuries during the second half of Saturday’s 3-0 win at Southampton in the Premier League.

Matthijs De Ligt, who scored the opening goal in that match, was also withdrawn but confirmed afterwards that he was only suffering from cramp.

“They are all available, they are good,” manager Erik ten Hag said on Martinez and Mazraoui on Monday.

The positional fluidity of Manchester United’s full-backs is a welcome sign of tactical evolution

On the injured trio of Rasmus Hojlund, Mason Mount and Victor Lindelof, Ten Hag added: “They are not ready for tomorrow. We will see (for the weekend) how the progress will continue.

“Luke Shaw is progressing but not yet ready to be selected. Ugarte, we will see tomorrow.

“He (Shaw) is progressing well. Of course, we have a plan in our head when he could be ready but you’re always dependent on how the progress will go. You can’t think, make a suggestion because there are so many factors why a plan can accelerate or slow down.”

Asked about building momentum from the Southampton game, having previously suffered back-to-back defeats against Brighton & Hove Albion and Liverpool, Ten Hag replied: “Absolutely, very important. I hope I have headaches because last year I also had headaches but there weren’t players available.

“I hope to have many available so I make selections game to game. It’s not only about the starting XI. It’s a nice headache.”

Following Tuesday’s home cup tie against League One Barnsley, United travel to Selhurst Park to face Crystal Palace in the Premier League on Saturday.
