Former Sheffield United defender George Baldock drowned while swimming in a pool at his home in Athens, his family said in a statement.
The England-born Greece international’s death was confirmed on Wednesday night at the age of 31.
“We are heartbroken with the sudden passing of our beloved George. We can confirm that a post-mortem examination has found that George tragically drowned whilst swimming in the pool at his home in Glyfada, Athens,” a statement from Baldock’s family read.
“George, you were the most special father, fiance, son, brother, uncle, friend, teammate and person. Your enthusiasm and infectious personality brought so much love to those that were fortunate enough to know you and those that adored you from the stands. We will forever cherish the special memories we have of you and you will continue to live on in your beautiful son. You were due to fly home today for us to celebrate his first birthday together, but instead we mourn your loss.
“As a family it has been incredibly touching, but equally so very difficult to read the huge number of tributes written by those that knew George and from those whose life he touched. It was impossible not to love him. We ask that you please continue to respect our privacy at this devastating time as we begin to process our grief.”

With England playing Greece in the Nations League on Thursday evening, players from both nations wore black armbands and held a one-minute silence before kick-off as a tribute to Baldock.
Baldock joined Greek side Panathinaikos in the summer after seven years at Sheffield United.
Sheffield United expressed their shock and sadness at Baldock’s passing, speaking of his popularity among supporters and staff during his time at the club. The Championship side released a statement on Wednesday, extending condolences to Baldock’s family and friends.
Having joined Sheffield United from MK Dons in 2017, Baldock made more than 200 appearances for South Yorkshire side, helping the team secure two promotions to the Premier League. His contributions included a standout performance in the 2019-20 season when they achieved their highest top-flight position, finishing ninth.
Brighton & Hove Albion, where Baldock’s brother Sam is a pathway development coach, also offered their condolences.
Baldock, who qualified to represent Greece through his grandmother, earned 12 caps for his country. His last international appearance was in March, during a European Championship play-off match against Georgia.
