One of the main reasons I love reading romance is for the escapism. Don’t get me wrong; I love falling in love with fictional characters, but the romance genre draws me in with the promise of cozy, comfort reading. Cracking open a book’s spine and knowing that no matter how bumpy the road ahead, there’s a happily-ever-after waiting in the end is the reassurance I’m looking for, especially during those moments when the news and the state of world gets me spiraling.
While the romance genre includes a number of sweet and spicy tropes, millionaire and billionaire romances offer some exceptional escapism. My life is a far cry from the millionaire lifestyle (to put it mildly), and reading a millionaire or billionaire romance provides an escape into a luxurious lifestyle with lots of feels and that heartfelt happily-ever-after just around the corner.
When reading romance, or any genre for that matter, diverse representation matters. Unfortunately, according to The Ripped Bodice’s report on The State of Racial Diversity in Romance Publishing, the percentage of romance books written by authors of color and published by leading romance publishers has dropped from 12.3% total industry-wide in 2022 to 10.2% in 2023. These numbers were already dishearteningly low, so seeing a recent decrease is upsetting, especially since the percentage from 2017 to 2022 had been trending upward.
We as readers have the agency to help reverse this downward trend by reading, promoting, and uplifting the works of Black, Indigenous, and people of color across genres, including romance. We must show publishers that we want and need more books featuring BIPOC romance, joy, and happily-ever-afters.
