Emi Martinez signs new Aston Villa contract until 2029

Emi Martinez has signed a new contract with Aston Villa until 2029.

The goalkeeper last signed a new contract in January 2022, which had been due to expire in June 2027.

Martinez, 31, joined Villa from Arsenal in September 2020 and has gone on to become one of the Premier League’s best goalkeepers. During his first season at Villa, Martinez kept 15 clean sheets and won the club’s player of the year award.

Since joining West Midlands side, Martinez has established himself as Argentina’s No 1, winning two Copa America titles and the 2022 World Cup with his national team. He won the Golden Glove award at all three of those tournaments.

Martinez has played 160 times for Villa, keeping 54 clean sheets. He previously spent time on loan at clubs including Reading, Rotherham and Sheffield Wednesday before signing permanently for Villa.

Villa began their 2024-25 season with a 2-1 win at West Ham United last Saturday. They return to action at home against Martinez’s former side Arsenal this Saturday and will discover their Champions League opponents during Thursday’s group-stage draw.
