In his annual news conference at Super Bowl LVIII Monday, NFL commissioner Roger Goodell announced that the Philadelphia Eagles will be the host team in the game played in Brazil in 2024. The matchup will be played on Friday of opening weekend in the 2024 season. The Eagles’ opponent will be revealed closer to the NFL’s 2024 schedule release in the spring. It is Philadelphia’s first international game since 2018.

“This landmark first international game in South America demonstrates the ongoing expansion of our global footprint,” Goodell said. “Playing on Friday night of Week 1 is a unique way to highlight our international growth and ambitions.”

The NFL is expanding its international series of games to São Paulo in 2024, the first time the league will play games in South America. With it being held in São Paulo at the Corinthians Arena, it will mark the fifth continent to feature an NFL game. Additionally, it will be one of five regular season games to be played internationally in 2024, with three in London and one in Germany. The league voted on Dec. 13, 2023 to approve an increase in annual international games from four to eight starting in 2025.

“With the global growth of our sport being a top priority to our league, we embrace the opportunity to grow our fanbase around the world and bring Eagles football to the 38 million sports fans in Brazil,” said Eagles chairman and CEO Jeffrey Lurie in a statement Monday.

The Eagles are one of five designated teams slated to play international games in 2024. The Chicago Bears, Minnesota Vikings and Jacksonville Jaguars will play in London, U.K. while the Carolina Panthers will play in Munich, Germany.

When asked about the NFL’s increased viewership, Goodell said that “having the Taylor Swift effect” is a positive. The AFC Championship Game, where Swift was in attendance, between the Kansas City Chiefs and Baltimore Ravens averaged 55.473 million viewers in the early window (3:03-6:12 p.m. ET). It was the most-watched AFC Championship Game ever, according to CBS.

“She knows great entertainment and that’s why she loves NFL football,” Goodell said on Swift.

Goodell spoke about officiating, saying that “the level of scrutiny is the highest we’ve ever seen it.” While Goodell praised NFL officials for doing a “great job,” he admitted that “no one is perfect.”

“We have to continue to try and get better, use technology when we can, to try and improve their performance,” Goodell said.

When asked about gambling concerns before the first Super Bowl in Las Vegas, Goodell said that the “integrity of the game is critical.”

The league has a strong policy that bars players, team personnel and NFL employees from betting on NFL games. Members of the  Chiefs and San Francisco 49ers are prohibited from betting of any kind in the lead up to the Super Bowl, which also means they’re not allowed to visit casinos even for non-sports gambling purposes while in Las Vegas.
