Brentford agree deal to sign Fabio Carvalho from Liverpool

Brentford have agreed to sign Liverpool midfielder Fabio Carvalho in a deal that could be worth £27.5million (€32m) with add-ons.

The Portuguese playmaker will have a medical before finalising a move to the Gtech Community Stadium.

The midfielder is under contract at Anfield until June 2027 but the Merseyside club have sanctioned his departure in an agreement that will see them a retain a 17.5 per cent sell-on clause.

Carvalho signed for Liverpool in a £5m deal from Fulham in 2022 and the Craven Cottage club will receive 20 per cent of the profit from the Brentford transfer.

The Athletic reported earlier this week that Liverpool had rejected a £15m bid from newly-promoted Southampton.

Carvalho impressed on the left flank during the pre-season tour of America as he scored against both Arsenal and Manchester United, but with the return of Luis Diaz and Cody Gakpo he would have found himself down the pecking order if he had stayed.

The 21-year-old spent the second half of last season on loan at Hull City, scoring nine goals in 20 appearances for the Championship outfit. Prior to that, he began the 2023-24 campaign in Germany with RB Leipzig on a temporary contract.

He has made 21 appearances for Liverpool across all competitions but has struggled to establish himself as a regular in the first team.

He will become Brentford’s second senior signing of the summer if a deal can be finalised with Jens Cajuste, the Sweden international midfielder, expected to follow him on a season-long loan with an option from Napoli.

Club-record signing Igor Thiago, who joined in a deal worth €36.5m (£30.8m; $39.6m), will miss the start of the season after suffering a knee injury during Brentford’s pre-season win over AFC Wimbledon.

Brentford begin the new Premier League campaign against London rivals Crystal Palace on August 17.
