Bayern Munich captain Manuel Neuer out of Champions League second leg vs. Inter with injury

Bayern Munich captain Manuel Neuer will not be fit to return for his side’s Champions League quarter-final second leg against Inter, the club confirmed on Tuesday.

Neuer, 39, has been sidelined since early March with a calf injury. Bayern head coach Vincent Kompany said last week he had “hope” the goalkeeper could return for the second leg, but added there was “no guarantee.”

Bayern trail Inter 2-1 in the tie ahead of the decisive leg at San Siro. Lautaro Martinez opened the scoring at the Allianz Arena last week, before Thomas Muller — who will depart the German club at the end of the season — got Bayern back level with five minutes to go. Davide Frattesi then scored in the 88th minute to give Inter an advantage in the tie.

Bayern said Neuer would travel with the squad “to support the team” for their match on Wednesday evening.

Jonas Urbig, 21, has started all seven matches in the absence of Neuer. He was named in the travelling squad alongside goalkeepers Daniel Peretz and Leon Klanac.

Kompany has yet to issue an update on Kingsley Coman’s availability, but Jamal Musiala, Alphonso Davies, Hiroki Ito and Aleksandar Pavlovic are all out through injury.

Musiala sustained a hamstring injury in Bayern Munich’s Bundesliga victory on April 4, and was expected to miss eight weeks upon his diagnosis.
