It looked for 20 minutes on Thursday night as though that wouldn’t be the case when the returning Hojlund and Marcus Rashford gave them a 2-0 lead away to Porto.
But chaos tapped United on the shoulder and drama slapped them in the face a few minutes later. Just a quarter of an hour after going up two goals, Ten Hag’s side were dragged back to 2-2 and Porto looked most likely to land the knockout blow.
And they thought they had when a second superb finish from Samu Omorodion gave them the lead five minutes after half-time. But, despite another red card for Bruno Fernandes, United responded in stoppage time thanks to a big header from Harry Maguire.
A brilliant 3-3 draw for the neutral, but more concern on the face of Ten Hag.
