Aston Villa defender Pau Torres out for two months with broken metatarsal

Aston Villa manager Unai Emery has confirmed Pau Torres has suffered a broken metatarsal, ruling the defender out for two months.

Torres required Villa’s medical staff to help him down the tunnel after sustaining the injury in the first half of the 2-2 draw with Brighton & Hove Albion on December 30, with Tyrone Mings taking his place.

After the game, Emery had hoped the metatarsal injury would not be too serious and scans were conducted in the days after to determine the extent of the damage.

However, speaking before Villa’s match against Leicester City, Emery confirmed the prognosis of Torres’ injury.

“Pau Torres has broken his fourth metatarsal and he is going to be out for, more or less, two months,” he said.

The 27-year-old has made 24 appearances across all competitions this season and is a key staple within Emery’s build-up system, utilising his passing dexterity and ball progression in higher positions. He has made 63 appearances in all for the club since joining from La Liga side Villarreal in July 2023.

Meanwhile, Emery revealed another central defender in Diego Carlos will miss the game against Leicester, as well as Jaden Philogene.

Jhon Duran, who was sent off against Newcastle, and Morgan Rogers, who has picked up five yellow cards, are suspended and will also be unavailable.

After hosting Leicester, Villa face West Ham United in the FA Cup third round on Friday. They travel to Everton and then Arsenal later in January before the Champions League resumes with a visit to Monaco on January 21.
