As fans prep for the NFL season, the Denver Broncos have started something new.
On Thursday, New York City-based Turner Construction broke ground on a new training facility and team headquarters in Englewood, Colorado, Megan Boyle, Broncos senior manager of strategic communications, told Construction Dive. The cost of the complex is $175 million, according to NBC affiliate 9News.
Turner will serve as CM/GC on the project, according to Chris McFadden, vice president of communications at the construction firm. The contractor is joined by designers HOK, Oz and Rockwell Group, Boyle confirmed to Construction Dive.
The three-story, 205,000-square-foot training facility will be 30% larger than the existing structure, according to an HOK press release from when the project was announced. The overall complex will be designed in a “contemporary Colorado style,” according to the Broncos.
The main headquarters will be located directly west of the existing facility on the plaza level and connect to the 115,000-square-foot Pat Bowlen Fieldhouse, built in 2014, HOK said. In total, the Broncos’ headquarters will span more than 320,000 square feet on 26 acres.
The first floor will house player spaces, which will increase by nearly 21,000 square feet to accommodate an expanded locker room, sports performances areas and meeting rooms, per HOK. Football operations will be located on the second floor, while business operations, including many staff currently based at the Broncos home field, Empower Field at Mile High Stadium, will be on the third floor.
The project was 100% privately funded, according to the Broncos, and the franchise expects construction to be complete ahead of the 2026 NFL season.
Construction on the upgraded HQ comes two years after the Walton-Penner Group bought the Broncos to the tune of $4.65 billion. The ownership group is made up of Walmart heir Rob Walton, his daughter, Carrie Walton-Penner, and his son-in-law, Greg Penner.
“The combination of layout, collaborative spaces, flexibility and size will place the Broncos’ new training facility among the very best in all of sports,” said Damani Leech, the Broncos president, in the franchise’s news release.
