A recent YouGov survey found that a majority of Americans, 52 percent, have high levels of trust in President Trump’s ability to manage immigration. But they are less likely to trust him with issues related to the environment and health care.
Forty-seven percent trust Trump with the economy, 45 percent with foreign policy and 43 percent with foreign trade.
The survey indicates a lack of trust in Trump on specific social issues. A significant portion of Americans express little to no trust in Trump on LGBTQ issues (51 percent), transgender issues (50 percent), the environment (49 percent), and race relations (49 percent).
The poll reveals stark partisan divides in trust regarding the president’s handling of various issues.
A substantial majority of Republicans express high confidence in Trump across all twenty issues surveyed, particularly on the economy (87 percent), immigration (87 percent), and foreign policy (84 percent). However, these figures represent slight declines from November 2024.
Republicans express the least amount of trust on LGBTQ issues (19 percent have no trust) and transgender issues, on which 15 percent expressed lack of trust in the president.
Democrats overwhelmingly express a complete lack of trust in Trump across all issues, with especially low confidence in his ability to manage race relations (84 percent) and LGBTQ issues (81 percent).
During his first week in office last month, Trump took several steps related to immigration, including new border policies and increased enforcement.
A key aspect of these actions is that while he has promised to address illegal immigration, many of the actions impact established legal immigration processes.
Trump has also issued numerous energy policies that dismantled environmental safeguards.
This pleased both his backers and the fossil fuel sector. Mike Sommers, CEO of the American Petroleum Institute, praised the actions, saying they would encourage U.S. oil and gas production. However, environmentalists expressed concern, arguing that the policies would damage the environment.
The YouGov survey of 1,132 respondents, taken Jan. 4-28, has a margin of error of plus or minus 4 percentage points.
