Aaron Hickey has signed a contract extension with Brentford until 2028.
Hickey joined Brentford from Bologna in July 2022 on a four-year contract in a £14million deal.
The full-back enjoyed an impressive debut season and made 26 appearances in the Premier League despite suffering an ankle injury which ruled him out for three months.
Last season, the Scotland international started nine of Brentford’s opening 10 games but then sustained a serious hamstring injury in training.
Hickey underwent surgery and was supposed to return before the end of that season but suffered a setback in February. The 22-year-old missed out on representing Scotland at the European Championship but returned to light training last summer.
Brentford announced in August there had been another setback in his recovery and he underwent another surgical procedure which “involved the removal of the previous repair sutures and making a new tendon repair” according to a statement from head physio Nick Stubbings on the club’s website.
His most recent appearance for the club came in a 2-1 victory over Chelsea in October 2023 and he is expected to miss the majority of this season, too.
Hickey’s existing deal was due to expire in 18 months. The contract extension grants the full-back more time to recover properly.
Brentford did something similar with midfielder Josh Dasilva, who underwent knee ligament surgery last February.
Dasilva’s contract was due to expire last summer but Brentford offered him a new one-year deal with a club option for an extra 12 months.
Brentford are in FA Cup third-round action against Plymouth Argyle on Saturday before playing host to Manchester City three days later in the Premier League.
