Arsenal's Alessia Russo withdraws from England squad with injury

Alessia Russo has returned to Arsenal for further assessment on an injury picked up while away on England duty.

The 26-year-old took a knock to her ankle during Friday’s 5-0 win over Belgium at Ashton Gate and was withdrawn shortly after. She was later seen applying ice to it on the substitutes’ bench.

England have confirmed she has been replaced in the 24-player squad for Tuesday’s reverse fixture in Leuven by fellow Arsenal forward Michelle Agyemang, who is currently on loan at Brighton & Hove Albion.

Agyemang was part of the England Under-19s squad, who have successfully qualified for this summer’s European Championships in Poland with a game to spare.

Russo joins Lauren James who also withdrew from the squad on Saturday.

The Chelsea forward picked up a hamstring problem during Friday’s game and was replaced at half-time. Jess Naz of Tottenham Hotspur was called up in her place.

Wiegman’s side sit top of Nations League League A Group 3 ahead of Tuesday’s game with world champions Spain second.
