Charlie Adam, Alan Irvine added to David Moyes' Everton backroom staff

Everton have added Alan Irvine and Charlie Adam to new manager David Moyes’ backroom staff.

Former Everton winger Irvine, 66, joins as assistant manager, a role he held under Moyes both at Goodison Park and with West Ham United.

Adam, meanwhile, will be the club’s first dedicated set-piece coach. The 39-year-old ex-Blackpool and Liverpool midfielder spent a year as manager of Fleetwood Town before being relieved of his duties at the League Two side in December.

The pair join Billy McKinlay and Leighton Baines as part of Moyes’ new-look backroom team, with the Scot having replaced Sean Dyche as Everton manager earlier this month.

“I’m delighted to have been able to add Alan and Charlie to our coaching staff,” Moyes said. “Alan is somebody who I have known for a very long time and have tremendous respect for. His knowledge of the game, as well as his understanding of what is required at Everton – a club that means a lot to both of us – will be invaluable.

“Charlie is someone I have had several chats with since rejoining the club. He will be helping with set-piece situations, an area he excelled in as a player and one I believe he can really help us with now as a coach.

“The two of them, along with Billy McKinlay and Leighton Baines, give us a really strong coaching foundation as we look to make positive strides forward.”

Speaking after taking the job earlier this month, Moyes suggested that he would reassess his backroom options at the end of the season.

“I’ve tended to work with a bigger staff as I’ve got on – just like probably everywhere else in football – their staff get bigger, so I want to try to look to bring in a coach with the idea of mainly working on set pieces,” he said.

“I’ve got some ideas I might look to alter in the summer, but I want to get us over the line first, before I start disclosing too much on what I might do then.”

After a narrow 1-0 home defeat by Aston Villa in his opening game in charge, Moyes recorded his first win since returning to Goodison at the weekend. The 3-2 victory over Tottenham Hotspur leaves Everton four points clear of relegation, with a game in hand over their rivals — the rescheduled Merseyside derby at Goodison next month.

Next up for Everton is a trip to Brighton & Hove Albion on Saturday.
