Tempers flared and benches cleared in Game 4 of the American League Division Series after the Kansas City Royals’ Maikel Garcia took offense to a tag applied by New York Yankees shortstop Anthony Volpe on a sixth-inning double play.
The Yankees led 3-0 when Michael Massey bounced a grounder to first baseman Jon Berti, who stepped on the bag and fired to Volpe covering second. Garcia slid late, and Volpe tagged him before the bag, then again after Garcia over-slid the base. Garcia stared at Volpe, who patted Garcia on the chest and the back. By then Jazz Chisholm Jr. had wandered over, catching Garcia’s attention, and the temperature was fully turned up.

Yankees starter Gerrit Cole stomped over, supplying a glare but nothing more, and both benches and bullpens emptied.
The Yankees lead the series 2-1 and would advance to the AL Championship Series with a win Thursday.
No ejections were issued.
